Tech giant Apple has fallen into a comfortable routine when it comes to announcing new products. Each September it holds a keynote conference, where it announces a brand-new iPhone model. With September 2017 marking the tenth anniversary of the pioneering iPhone, the approaching ‘special event’ will be one of the most highly anticipated yet.
So what can we expect from the Apple team at the annual launch event? Let’s take a look at some of the biggest rumours.
iPhone SE to receive an upgrade
Many are speculating that this year will see Apple upgrade the iPhone SE model to something new: the iPhone SE2 or the SEs, for example. The SE is the budget option in the iPhone range, and the only Apple phone in the current range to have a four-inch screen. Will we see the SE upgrade this September, or will Apple be making a bigger announcement at this event?
The iPhone 7s or 8?
So far, Apple has followed a pattern in terms of its launch names. The Apple iPhone 5 was followed by the iPhone 5s, which was followed by the Apple iPhone 6, which was followed by the Apple iPhone 6s, and so on. There’s generally a two-year cycle with Apple phones – a new model is launched, then the following September a slightly upgraded version hits the market. Twelve months later, it’s time for another new model. But with this year being the tenth anniversary, will the tech giants be looking to buck the trend and create a new cycle?
Features of the new iPhone
Leaked images and rumours surrounding the new iPhone suggest the removal of the Home screen button, a feature of the handsets for many years. So where will the newly-added fingerprint sensor go? Many are speculating that the screen itself will act as a fingerprint sensor, removing the need for a dedicated button. Apple’s investment in an Israeli startup called RealFace also suggests that facial recognition may play a part.
Wireless charging is likely to be included – there are rumours that the new iPhone will be able to perform long-range wireless charging, which would really be a step ahead of rivals Android. Augmented reality software is also set to be included, with a feature to overlay relevant information on the screen when you point a camera at something.
iOS 11
Apple unveiled iOS 11 at its last special event, but it’s still being tested by developers right now. It’s set to be launched to the public in September too, with lots of new features to play with, whether you’re investing in the new iPhone or upgrading an older one. New multitasking functions will be of interest, and the Photos and Camera apps have had a makeover.
Apple Watch 3?
Those in the know also believe that the Apple Watch 3 could be launched at the September event, with possible new features including the ability to make FaceTime calls, and in-built 3G or 4G, so that the device can operate independently from an iPhone.
