Finding investment for your business is tough at any time – but it’s been especially tough in recent years. In fact, data from Beauhurst has found that investment in British startups was ‘stagnant’ in Q1 2017, with total investment figures well below those recorded in the same period last year.
However, there’s one area of business funding and investment that looks bright: equity crowdfunding. Around £45m was invested through crowdfunding in the last quarter, with 80 success campaigns creating an 11% rise on Q4 2016. If you’re interested in crowdfunding or other ways to fund your business, here are some of the best business funding and investment sites out there.
Funding Circle
Everyone loves a great British success story and Funding Circle is not only one of them – it’s creating others. The P2P lending platform has already lent £2.5bn to businesses all over the world, in the UK, Germany, the US and the Netherlands. Businesses can use the platform to borrow from a huge number of investors, with the application process taking less than ten minutes and finance available within a week. Success stories include Firstnet Solutions, which borrowed more than £120,000 to fund a new data centre, and Teasdale Motorcycles, which tripled its turnover thanks to loans from Funding Circle.
Tilt
The crowdfunding space is dominated by the likes of Kickstarter and Indiegogo, but lesser-known Tilt is starting to make a name for itself. Its fees are cheaper than many of the more popular crowdfunding sites, and it’s already helped to fund projects for big names like Microsoft, Reddit and Soylent. According to Tilt, their funding success rate is 91% – which is reassuring, because it’s an ‘all-or-nothing’ type funding sites, where you’ll only be able to access the funds you’ve raised if you meet your target.
AngelList
The Kickstarter of the equity crowdfunding world, AngelList has helped firms like Uber and Postmates to connect with vital investors. It’s completely free to use, which means it’s an invaluable tool for networking with potential investors and managing the entire investment process from start to finish. It’s a crowded marketplace, but if your pitch is good enough, you’ll soon get noticed.
Kickfurther
This platform provides crowdfunded loans that are solely for inventory financing – and you can only use it to seek funding if you’ve already had one successful production run. You set your own interest rate for backers that help to fund your inventory financing, and you can specify how long you estimate it will take for the inventory to sell. Once it’s started to sell, you pay your backers. If your business has outgrown sites like Kickstarter, which are generally for new startups, this is a great option for you.
