4 common web design mistakes for small businesses to avoid

Ilya Nasedkin • 18 May 2018

Website design has evolved rapidly over the last decade and it is no longer enough for companies to have colourful web pages with a lot of content on them. Even the smallest aspects of a website’s design can mean the difference between converting a customer and losing them instantly. If you’re looking to decrease bounce rates and improve user retention, be sure to avoid these common mistakes.

Bad colour scheme Choosing the right colours for your website is an important part of improving the user experience and increasing retention. Many website designers and online companies make the mistake of simply cramming a huge range of colours into their website without considering how it will affect the overall design. Never be afraid to use bold colours or unique schemes, but ensure that they are reflective of your brand and that they are in line with current industry trends. No responsive design In recent years, there has been a huge transition to mobile and the majority of web browsers and consumers are now using mobile devices to answer queries and search for new products. Many small businesses, particularly those who have only recently developed an online presence, often overlook the need to cater to mobile users. In the current market, it’s vital that your website is responsive to all major platforms so you can maximise reach and increase conversion. Inaccessible navigation bar The navigation bar on any website is the most important aspect of the user experience and is responsible for helping users explore your website and discover your services. There are plenty of different variations and styles to consider but the most important things to remember when creating a navigation bar is that it needs to be easily visible and streamlined. Having a dropdown feature is useful but you should have a selection of main headings. Too many adverts Advertising can be a great source of revenue for many online companies if done correctly. However, adverts can often be the cause of high bounce rates and can negatively affect retention and conversion figures. If your website is packed full of adverts, it can be very confusing for new users trying to navigate your site by making it difficult for them to distinguish your content. It’s also important to use adverts that are related to your industry and are relevant to your customers.
