3 social media resolutions for 2020

Ilya Nasedkin • 3 January 2020

Is smashing your social media goals at or near the top of your digital marketing and SEO priorities for 2020? As networks like Instagram, TikTok, Pinterest and Facebook evolve, marketers are faced with the challenging task of keeping pace and standing out above the noise.Getting noticed and generating ROI from your investment in social media is tough but it can be done. To help you on your way, we suggest making (and sticking to!) these 3 social media resolutions for 2020.

Resolution 1: hashtag research Do you often find yourself creating a post and then randomly tagging on a few hashtags? Hashtags are a great vehicle for post discovery so using them is a very positive first step but, to truly elevate your social media performance to new highs, you need to be considered and strategic about which tags you use.Experts suggest that on Instagram, you use around 10 or so hashtags per post (you can use up to 30 but that many can appear spammy). You need to make those 10 tags count so research which hashtags are trending and pick ones which appeal to your target audience while also matching post content. You’ll find several tools online to help with research – Ingramer, Sistrix and Seek Metrics are all popular. Resolution 2: get curating Very few brands create enough of their own content to populate their social media channels with their own links exclusively. Content creation is often overlooked but it’s your secret tool for accessing good quality, popular content to engage and retain your social media fan base. Content curation is very simple – you just seek out content from others (not competitors of course) to supplement your own original content. Look for items which are already popular and hone in on things like video, memes, GIFs and news items which you may not be able to produce easily or cheaply in house. Resolution 3: schedule If 2019 got away from you a little and you didn’t stick to your social media update timetable as rigorously as you could, don’t despair. A scheduling tool such as Hootsuite or Buffer allows you to bulk upload posts in one sitting and then have your social media profiles updated through the week. You’ll also get useful analytics such as shares, new likes and post reach, which can help you adapt and hone your approach moving forwards for even more success and better engagement.
