App Store spending on Christmas Day hits milestone
According to reports, many consumers found themselves downloading a new app or two (perhaps on their shiny new devices found under the tree?) on Christmas Day. It’s thought that a record $193 million was spent globally on the App Store on 25 December. That figure represents a 16% year-on-year increase, says a report by Sensor Tower.
The Google Play Store wasn’t quite as busy but nevertheless dealt with a very respectable $84 million of downloads, an increase of 2.7% on Christmas Day 2018. The majority of spending was concentrated within the games category, which also grew 8% year-on-year.
US Army bans TikTok installs
The US Army has reportedly banned its personnel from installing the viral video app, TikTok on government-issued mobile devices. Lt Col Robin Ochoa, a US Army Spokesperson, said that the decision to blacklist TikTok stemmed from it being considered a “cyber threat”. The US Navy has already enacted a similar ban which comes as US lawmakers are said to be increasingly considered about the prospect of the app being used for Chinese intelligence gathering.
For its part, TikTok says that this isn’t the case and has commissioned an independent audit of the app to ensure no US data is sent to China via third-party apps.
