One of the things that you’ll know going into a new web design project, whether that’s as a new web design business owner or as a client having a fresh new site built, is that seeing your site soar to the top of the Google rankings isn’t a quick and easy task. Search engine optimisation takes time and activities such as link building are long-term commitments. That said, it is possible to make a few quick wins and perform some SEO tasks in a relatively short space of time to take quite an important step forwards. To help you get your new business website off to a great start, here are some easy SEO wins you can make now…
1. Weed out any thin content If you’re simply giving an old site a new look, chances are you’ll be moving much of your existing content, such as product descriptions and older blog posts across to the new design. Especially for blog posts, this is the right thing to do but, this act is also an opportunity to make an SEO win. While you’re getting the old content inputted to the new design, take time to weed out thin content. Thin content is basically those blog posts which are very short, which you rushed, which are very out of date or perhaps very light on actual detail. Content which isn’t useful or unique should also go as should anything that barely skims over the surface of a topic. 2. Create good quality content Weeding out the thin content on your site, be that product pages with little text or text copied from the manufacturer, or short, outdated blog content should have given you an idea of content gaps. This is a chance to create good quality content, with an eye to quality rather than quantity. Good quality content is original, useful, detailed and well-researched. You may want to quote experts, have an expert write it, include up-to-date facts, figures and data as well as images, videos, infographics and other multimedia content where possible. 3. Shave time off your page load speed With the majority of Internet users interacting with brands and retailers via mobile devices, page load speed is an important consideration not just for SEO purposes but for the overall user experience too.Google has said page load speed is a ranking factor and conducted research which concluded the longer a page takes to load, the higher the bounce rate becomes. Images that haven’t been compressed, lengthy HTML code and bulky CSS files all cause pages to be slow to load. Streamlining where possible to speed up the site performance can quickly have a positive effect on SEO.
