In Q1 of 2019, the two most downloaded apps worldwide were video streaming and upload apps. This leaves the top messaging and social media apps sitting in the lower half of the top 10. With international mobile data streaming services continuing to improve and provide faster data downloading and live streaming, it’s not likely to be a surprise that mobile video is booming. It may be a surprise however that they are out performing some of the big boy social media platforms and messaging apps when it comes to the number of downloads racked up in 2019 so far.
Here’s a run down of some of 2019’s top downloaded apps from Q1:
Social Media Platforms
The big boys haven’t been pushed out of the top 10 just yet. Facebook owned Instagram, which was the fastest growing social media platform of 2018, continues to feature in the top 5 with over 32 million downloads recorded in Q1 alone. Facebook itself, despite having a turbulent 2018 and start to 2019, also features prominently with similar stats just one spot below at 29 million app downloads.
Despite the big numbers for the Facebook platforms, they are the only dedicated social media platform style apps in the top 10 with the likes of Twitter and Pinterest nowhere in sight.
Messenger apps
Messengers are starting to evolve even further and for many would be the top bet for the most downloaded apps if for no other reason than their impressive daily user base statistics. Despite this, the top messenger services such as Facebook Messenger and Whatsapp only occupy positions four and three in the most downloaded charts for 2019. Their apps racked up up 33 million and 35 million downloads respectively.
WeChat is another top 10 feature when it comes to the most downloaded of the year to date. The Chinese messenger app also features mobile payment functionality and has racked up a total of over 1 billion active users as of 2018 despite only being launched in 2011, just seven years earlier! The app notched up almost 29 million downloads in Q1 this year.
Video Streaming
Filling both of the top spots for Q1, video streaming apps including regular top 3 feature YouTube continue to be the most downloaded of all mobile apps. You Tube alone took almost 36 million downloads in Q1 but the global video giant was actually beaten to the number one position by Chinese founded app, Tik Tok.
Tik Tok is known as Douyin in its native China and tops the downloads chart by some distance with almost 46 million downloads in Q1 alone. Roughly 10 million more than YouTube. Tik Tok is a music video inspired video streaming, uploading and social media platform which allows the creation, editing and uploading of short video clips. Hailed as a total phenomenon in China, the app separates itself from other video editors and uploaders with a range of built in video filters, visual and audio effects which can be used to create epic clips.
