Small Businesses: How effective is your marketing?

Marketing is a crucial component to any successful business, or indeed any successful person. Whether you are marketing a new product, service, or even your own self, it plays a crucial role in how we are perceived. The theme behind today’s blog is to assess how small businesses are currently failing to market themselves in the best possible way.

A new survey carried out by the Centre for Economics and Business Research (CEBR) found that the majority of Britain’s 4.8 million business owners are confused about marketing in general and particularly internet marketing. The CEBR estimate that businesses are losing out on £122 billion of sales because of poorly devised marketing. Infact, more money is now wasted on marketing than in any other part of most small businesses.

With that being said, how can you help businesses make cost savings as well as improve the effectiveness of their marketing?

The first step to helping any small business is to assess exactly what type of marketing they are involved with and how much it costs. Do they use their existing website? leaflets? textmessage marketing? TV/radio adverts? word of mouth referrals?

All of these methods are commonly utilised by small business owners today, but is there one glaring omission? Yes, you guessed it, “mobile marketing”. The one thing that almost all businesses have in common in the modern world, regardless of what industry they operate within, is the fact that the majority of their customers are using smartphones on a daily basis.

With the vast majority of small businesses in the UK not delivering a mobile experience on their website or engaging with their customers via an app, you can potentially deliver a real value added service.

As a mobile marketing expert, you can help small businesses leverage mobile technology and avoid the perils of wasting money on ineffective ways to promote their business. Delivering a full mobile experience to any customer that visits a small businesses website is crucial in the customer acquisition stage. Engaging with customers through the expert use of an app will aid customer retention and ensure that small businesses build loyalty for the long term.

Shaping this area of their marketing and assessing the impact it plays on their business is all part of the value added service that many small businesses are craving.
