Progressive Web Apps now on Chrome

Rebecca Appleton • 19 October 2018

If you’re a regular reader, you’ll know that we are big fans of Progressive Web Apps here at Eazi-Apps (PWA). We first started to talk about this new technology several months ago – if you missed those first few posts, we’ll recap the basics of PWA below. For now though, let’s talk about a big new development in the arena of PWA.

That big development is of course that Google, who like us have also been championing PWA for a while now, has finally started to integrate PWAa fully with its browser Chrome. The search engine has started to roll our Chrome version 70 this week and with this new version has come the presence of PWAs. If you haven’t yet updated your browser, when you upgrade to Chrome 70 for Windows 10, you’ll be able to see web apps for desktop use.

When you do update your version of Chrome, you’ll find that Progressive Web Apps are now included by default when you click the Start menu button. They aren’t yet available for Chrome on Mac but Google says that this functionality is coming in version 72+.

In a post on its Developer page, published by Google Developer Advocate, Pete LePage, Google was clear on the benefits of PWAs and what it can bring to the user experience, saying:

Desktop progressive web apps can be 'installed' on the user's device much like native apps. They're fast . Feel integrated because they launched in the same way as other apps, and run in an app window, without an address bar or tabs. They're reliable because service workers can cache all of the assets they need to run. And they create an engaging experience for users.”

So, fast, integrated, reliable and engaging – key selling points for users and PWA developers alike.
