Essential email marketing tips that every business owner should know.

Having a long email list of customers that are interested in what you have to say is a goal for many entrepreneurs.

In order to make this a reality, you must implement an email marketing strategy that encourages users to sign up, open your emails and then take action.

To help kick-start a successful email marketing campaign, we’ve compiled 8 of the best up-to-date tips for excellent results.

Talk like a real person

Your emails are being sent to real people, so make sure you speak like one too.

Emails should be fun and friendly, not boring and corporate.

Talk directly to the customer, use natural language and don’t make it sound too salesey—even if that is the goal of your email campaign.

Add a personal touch

Including a subscribers name in the opening line isn’t going to cut it anymore, instead, you should show the reader that you really understand them.

You can do this through sharing relevant information, specific promotions and discounts, or showing content based on their location or lifestyle.

Send emails at the right time

You want to make sure you’re sending emails at a time when people are likely to want to read them to maximise your open rates.

Generally, the best times to send emails are between 6.00-8.00am and 8.00 pm-12.00 am.

Optimise your emails for mobile

Most people read emails on their phones so consider how your email will be displayed.

Think about how images will load, if your full email will fit the screen, or if the design will be affected by people using dark mode.

Promotions aren’t the key to nurturing relationships

Although you may have something to sell, promotions aren’t always the way to grow your business and foster relationships with customers.

Think of other ways that you can gain loyalty and trust, like sharing business updates, introducing your team, or asking readers for feedback and opinions.

Don’t worry about unsubscribers

Try not to feel too disappointed when you see people unsubscribing from your emails—it happens!

It’s always better to have a smaller list of people who are genuinely interested in you and your business, rather than a long list of people who never even read your emails.

Don’t send an email just for the sake of it

It’s good to keep the attention of your readers, but don’t feel pressured to send emails when you don’t really have anything to say.

If there’s nothing you want to share, don’t force it. If you start emailing irrelevant information, your readers will find it annoying and unsubscribe.

Try A/B testing

Like any strategy, you won’t always get it right straight away. To increase your chances of success, try A/B testing.

The goal of A/B testing is to have 2 different emails with slightly different content, send these out to different groups of people and see which is the most effective.
