How you can use colour to influence your site visitors?

The psychology of colour has been studied for centuries. The effect on our mood and psyche of a room painted entirely in white would be very different to one that was covered from window to wall in red for example. Knowing how colours make us feel has helped many fashion and retail moguls achieve successful careers. So it’s important then, to note that the colour of your website can have a significant effect on how the audience perceives and responds to your company. Take a look at what your website’s colours might say about you. Software you can trust It’s well known that the colour blue promotes feelings of tranquillity and calm, but web design experts have found that websites that use this colour are far more likely to be deemed ‘trustworthy’ by their users.Blue is also synonymous with the sea and the sky; vast expanses that give a feeling of limitless possibility. This is why SaaS sites like Salesforce and businesses that are primarily concerned with finance like credit card company, American Express use blue in their website design. Class and luxury These feelings are surprisingly simple to convey in terms of the colour palette they use. Monochrome colours are the best way to give your website a high-end feel, especially black or white. Simplicity is key to these companies, so a black and white site with uncomplicated, intuitive icons and graphics like Apple's can give near legendary appeal.Teaming black or white with one colour is also great for e-commerce websites like Amazon. Amazon is incredibly popular because they mix black with orange to create a feeling of: Impulsivity and buying power The use of orange on e-commerce websites has proved effective because it instils in the web user a sense of fun, excitement and frivolity: perfect for a retail experience. For years, shops and department stores have used a variety of techniques to maximise a buyer’s experience. Everything in a bricks-and-mortar shop is designed to encourage visitors to part with their cash, but how can you do that in an online environment? Colour! The most successful e-commerce websites will usually feature orange or gold colours somewhere in their palette like online retail giants Amazon and Etsy. Eco-friendly and safe Want to encourage your website visitors to go green? Then you should do just that! Green websites are synonymous with nature, and non-profit organisations who have eco-friendly ideals find success in the use of green. It’s also sensible for companies who aren’t known for their positive impact on the planet, but who want to seem more environmentally friendly like British Gas and British Petroleum (BP), to use green in their branding to convey a sense of nature and simplicity.
