It’s said to death we know it is, but consistency is often the key and applies to so many scenarios. It’s the same with SEO success and while it applies in a few different areas, one of the most basic areas where you need to apply a consistent mindset is with respect to your on page SEO elements. On page elements are essentially all of the building blocks of your web pages. When we talk about on page SEO, we’re approaching optimisation on a page by page basis and where possible, honing in on a single keyword or phrase for each of those pages. By now, if you’re familiar with SEO basics and have read some of our other SEO blogs, you’ll know that some of the standard SEO on page elements include page titles, URLs, body text, meta descriptions and alt tags and H1 headers.
If you have too many keywords of phrases to focus on for
every page, you’re going to struggle to create a focused URL and build SEO
power. This is why we suggest trying to look at pages on an individual level, matching each unique page with a single
keyword phrase. When we talk about consistency, what we’re talking about in
essence is the consistent use of this keyword phrase in all of the major
elements of your on-page SEO and doing so correctly. For example, you’d expect that the page title and major
headers (H1 text, H2 etc) match up with the page’s URL. After all, these are
really prominent areas of text which tell the user and the search engines what
any given page is about. But consistency doesn’t stop there, and it also isn’t
limited to just using the keyword phrase within these elements. It is also
beneficial for you to use the keyword as early in each of these major elements
as possible. Ideally the entire keyword phrase should be used as within your
page title, headers and URL. These elements should not be overly long in terms
of word and character count. Keep things simple and focused and you’ll find
it’s much easier to be consistent. This requirement for consistency then carries over to the
meta descriptions and body content. The first paragraph of text on your page is
particularly important. Using the full keyword phrase in both of these elements
is key. Again, be consistent and use your chosen keyword as soon as you can in
the meta description and body text. This consistent approach across your page will
make it easy for the search engine to determine exactly what your page is about
and which keyword it should be ranking you for.
