We all know that in most cases, money attracts talent. Big attractive salaries lead to a larger and often higher calibre of candidates when it comes to filling roles at your company. Let’s face it, we all want the best people in our teams and working on our business with us. What you may not realise though is that many businesses aren’t utilising all the tools at their disposal when it comes to keeping their teams happy.
Yes, big salaries will always be an appealing proposition for a role at any business, but it’s not the be all and end all. In a recent study, 48% of employees said that they pay significant attention to the perks and full package of working for a company versus judging the allure of the position purely based on salary cap.
Particularly for the newer generations, while money is a huge incentive, the day-to-day quality of working life has become increasingly paramount as a consideration. Workplace satisfaction has never been more important.
Work Life Balance
We hear this term often, but the issue is that it separates work from the rest of your life. In an ideal scenario your work and your career should seamlessly integrate. Many of us spend so much time working that we don’t want it to feel this way. Work and life integration is a much more appealing and cohesive concept that’s a lot more realistic for our busy scheduled.
Your work force should see working hours as part of their life not something that exists in its own bubble and is completely separated from other elements. Encouraging positive social interactions and fun within the workplace is the best way to do this. Work doesn’t have to feel like work. Schedule events in the same way your employees would in their personal lives and have an open, social office – try organising a Friday Night games night for example or a Saturday sports day maybe even a team movie night or video game challenge.
Embrace the Power of Food
Food is a huge expense and it’s also a pleasurable experience for many. Us humans love to eat and we love good food. Everyone is different but in reality, no one likes having to pack their lunch in Tupperware for work. We like fresh food that’s available when we want it.
If you have the resource or office set up to provide fresh food at work, it’s a big plus. But the simplest of needs can be catered for with the availability of snacks and treats. Provide the biscuits and tea bags, doughnut Fridays and pizza Wednesdays. It’s not that hard to keep people content, feed them! This perk is especially attractive to millennials so it’s well worth considering if you want to attract talent from that demographic as you grow your team.
Employee Recognition Programs
Here’s an age-old idea. Recognise your employee contributions to the business and the workplace and celebrate them. It might be a little old school to run employee of the month. The issue with that scheme is that it’s not structured and celebrating one single person within a mid-sized work force isn’t going to filter through to everyone.
Have a recognition platform or process in place which celebrates hard work and big achievements is the modern version of this. Don’t forget that if you do really want to integrate work and life better for your team, bring external celebration and recognition into play as well. Not all success is related to your employment.
