You’ve probably written hundreds of blogs before. Who hasn’t? Blogs are one of the simplest yet most effective ways to directly engage with website visitors. Yet there’s a big difference between writing a blog, and writing a blog as a new entrepreneur who has just taken up our mobile app agency business opportunity.
So if you’re struggling to figure out where to start and how to write your very first blog post as a new entrepreneur, we’ve created this easy 6 step guide to help you out:
Step 1: Generate a title
If you’ve worked for businesses before, you’re probably used to being given titles and working from there. As an entrepreneur, however, you’re out on your own. While there’s a common trend for marketers to think up an idea and form the perfect title once they’ve further developed that idea through their writing, this can often result in a post full of tangents and associated concepts. For your very first post, it’s important to keep it focused, leaving your readers with absolutely no doubt about what it is that you do. Therefore, your first step should be to generate a title, and develop an idea from there.
Step 2: Know where your readers are at
Although it would be nice in terms of boosting readership, it’s impossible to target a huge range of audiences through just a single post. That’s why you need to determine where your target readership is at before getting started on the post. Are you targeting entry level audiences in your selected field, or are you hoping to engage more with those who have greater experience within your business area? Knowing your audience (if you haven’t already created personas, now is a good time to do so) is key to not only developing your title into an idea, but also to including the best type of information.
Step 3: Consider content form
There are many different types of blog post that entrepreneurs use to share their knowledge with their audiences, engage with them, educate them, and promote their products, services, and experience. But what’s right for your first blog as a new entrepreneur? For your first post, it’s best to avoid the curated collections and news type posts, and instead stick to content forms that really allow you to solidify your place as an industry expert. Consider options that best allow you to share your knowledge and experience, like ‘how to’ guides and list type blogs that offer actionable advice.
Step 4: Maintain consistency
When creating posts on behalf of a business, there’s always some type of existing message that forms the basis of the content. As an entrepreneur, however, it’s up to you to determine what your message is, and how you’re going to incorporate this into your blog. While it may seem like this should happen organically (and it can), it’s worth paying attention to this particular area as getting it wrong can result in a pretty notable disconnect between your blog, your website, and your social profiles. When adding a new channel into the mix, maintaining consistency across them all is absolutely vital.
Step 5: Bookend your idea
We’ve already touched on the importance of focus for an initial blog post, and it’s possible to improve the chances to retaining this focus by ‘bookending’ your idea. This means writing both an introduction and a conclusion before getting started on the main body of your work. What this does is set out the points that you want to share with your readers through your writing, and determines exactly what it is that you want your readers to draw from your content. By getting the bookends right before continuing, you’ll find it’s easier to create content that takes the reader on a journey from A to B.
Step 6: Get writing
The final step to creating your first blog as an entrepreneur is to write your post. When writing, there are many different aspects that should be taken into account to ensure an optimal outcome. Considering the reading level of the audience is one of them, taking care to use terms and sentence structures that can be understood by the reader. Incorporating relevant keywords is another, especially if you’re hoping to improve blog traffic through SEO. However, the most important aspect is to proofread your work, taking care to avoid silly mistakes which could cost you your readership.
