As winter closes in here in the eastern hemisphere and the busy pre-Christmas season gets underway, it’s easy to find yourself feeling tired, run-down, unable to sleep and lacking in energy. This time of the year can be especially challenging for entrepreneurs with so much pressure to get things done before Christmas plus more family commitments as everyone gets ready for the festive season.
Adopting a few self-care techniques can help you to stay
productive and healthy over the winter period. Try our tips to get started…
1. Make time for breakfast
It’s not called the most important meal of the day for nothing! Finding time for breakfast can be a struggle when life gets busy but this is an important habit to get into. A healthy breakfast fuels you up for the morning ahead and gives your body the energy it needs to focus, problem solve and get productive.
If you find yourself running out the door each day, overnight oats are a life saver. Just add porridge oats to a mason jar, any milk of choice and place in the fridge overnight. Grab as you leave the house to enjoy a tasty, nutritious breakfast in the morning. Add cocoa, honey, spices such as cinnamon or fresh or dried fruit to up the nutritional value. Porridge is a great source of energy, low in fat and a good source of fibre.
2. Swap your latte for green tea
If you often find yourself making a coffee to give you energy, try swapping out one of your standard cups for a green tea instead. Green tea is high in antioxidants and nutrients which help your body to fight bugs and stave off disease.
3. Add ginger to your diet
A distant relative of the wonder spice, Turmeric, ginger has long since been valued for its nutritional properties and health benefits. It’s great if you feel a cold coming on and soothes the tummy if you have digestive issues. Better still it’s available in myriad forms, from tea bags to dried spice.
4. Make time for exercise
The cold, dark, wet nights and chilly mornings, coupled with a heavy workload, don’t lend themselves to an active lifestyle but making time to move your body each day can help you to stay healthy and provide a great source of stress relief. It’s tempting to put off the gym or sports practise when work is piling up and it’s horrible outside but turn off that computer and go. Exercise releases endorphins which can lift your mood if you’re feeling low or stressed.
