It can be hard to keep ahead of marketing trends, especially in the ever growing world of mobile apps.
To help you stay abreast of what is current, what is falling away, and what could sink or save your business, here are some mobile marketing trends to keep an eye on.
Picture a commuter travelling to work, suddenly realising he has forgotten an upcoming birthday. He reaches for his smartphone and opens up the right app. By the time he arrives at work, a birthday card and gift are ordered and paid for and will be delivered the following morning. This is a mobile moment. It is the expectation of a consumer that they can use their smartphone to fulfil a need instantly, regardless of where they are or what they’re doing in that moment.
Business owners should be identifying these mobile moments and optimising a response to them. Online gift card companies track what card was purchased and when, then target that consumer a year later with reminders of the date and suggested purchases. You could be the reason your consumer has their mobile moment; both the cause and the solution.
Some of the best uses of augmented(AR) and virtual reality(VR) in recent months have been built into games. Pokémon Go reached 100 million downloads in just shy of a month on the Google Play market alone. A month after it was launched, it had earned $268 million.
But while games may have made AR and VR mainstream, they’re far from the only industry utilising the technology. Education centres are using Google Cardboard to take guided tours of foreign cities, or walk through history to learn lessons as if they had been transported back in time.
Hospitals have employed augmented and virtual reality in patient care, and retailers can now let consumers ‘try on’ clothes or make up, all through an app on their phone. Consumers are enchanted and fascinated by this technology. As well as the fun and novelty, the real practical uses emerging mean it may well become vital to many consumers’ daily lives.
It remains to be seen if every industry can or indeed should adopt such powerful visualisation tools, but for those that have, the future is now.
In 2019 global smartphone shipments are expected to reach 2 billion. But many of these shipments will not be to Western Europe or North America. In these parts of the world, we have reached a point of peak smartphone. That is to say, most of us own a smartphone that functions just fine, and won’t be replaced any time soon.
Business owners must therefore look for other markets to target. India has the fastest growing smartphone market in the world; by the second quarter of 2016, India accounted for nearly 30 million smart device sales.
India has also become something of a centre for smartphone innovation. Paperless and cashless systems may become commonplace in India far before the rest of the world. And while the rest of us use our biometric thumb print to unlock our phones, India is investigating Iris recognition technology.
It seems that every month smartphone technology finds some new way to capture the imagination of consumers. As we have discussed above, these innovations are proving huge hits with consumers. For any mobile business, how innovative and creative you are with these trends will be the key behind your success, or failure, going forwards.
