Apple has revealed its 2018 Apple Design Award winners this week. The Design Awards have been given out to app developers each year for the last 21 years to recognise those who have delivered exceptional creations across the iOS environment, from iPhone to iPad and Watch.

This year’s award winners have just been named – with these app developers recognised for their work at the pinnacle of the development game - so read on for some serious design inspiration…

Agenda

The note taking app Agenda won its Dutch creation a Design Award by taking it back to basics. The clear, minimal design interface makes it easy for users to get an uncluttered view of the day along with tasks, notes and other functions to make keeping on track easier than ever.

Calzy 3

You might think a calculator app would be undeserving of a coveted Design award but this is one seriously cool tool and Apple clearly loves it beautiful aesthetic. Created by a team in India, Calzy 3 has lots of useful functionality built in for the serious mathematician, including a Memory tool and drag and drop feature.

INSIDE

This game, from the Danish develop Playdead, fuses action with puzzles – a design twist that Apple felt was deserving of a Design Award. This game is more than just your average game, as it also incorporates narrative on socio and political issues, showing that it pays to think outside the box even when creating something as standard as an action game app.

Bandimal

An app for kids which was developed in Finland, Bandimal uses fun visuals and an easy interactive design to help kids discover a love of music. The app’s clever design sees different animals used to represent different notes, allowing kids to develop their own unique composition by tapping on certain creatures.

Oddmar

Another game winning a Design award, Oddmar is the creation of a Turkish developer and is set in a Viking world populated with mythical creatures and a host of unusual challengers for players.

Alto’s Odyssey

Alto’s Odyssey is a sequel to the popular Alto’s Adventure. It calls on players to perform tricks and journey across an endless desert on their sandboards. The design has been called “stunningly beautiful” by critics so it’s easy to see why this made Apple’s 2018 cut.
