With the likelihood much of the work force in European countries will either elect to or be told to work from home in the near future thanks to the spread of the coronavirus, we thought it might be handy for you to know how to master working from home.
Working from home is an increasingly popular choice for many, given the power and ready availability of the right technology and connectivity for it to not really be a hinderance. If your employer trusts you enough or you are a solo entrepreneur and suitably self-sufficient, it can be a great option and will save you both time and money in avoiding a daily commute. The issue is not all of us have done this before and many of us won’t have the set up for it. Let’s talk you through three essential aspects to get you ready to work from home if the pandemic forces you to explore remote working options for yourself and your team.
Your Work Space
This is probably one of the most important aspects of working from home and actually the one that most individuals struggle with. Being able to have a dedicated workspace which is separated from your day-to-day living environment is key. The last thing you want is for your business papers and various notes and stationery to be littered all around the house or crowding your dining room table.
Not only is it practical simply from a physical space perspective but there is also a mental advantage to having a dedicated workspace. You’re not likely to be able to get into a working and focused frame of mind if you’re sat on your sofa in the same spot you would usually fall asleep to Netflix.
Clear a space and allocate it to working. This is your workspace now and when you sit down, you’re there to do business and focus on the job rather than get distracted. The same as you would at the office keep it clean and keep it tidy. No one is going to feel inspired or productive working next to yesterday’s grimy porridge bowl.
You Are Still a Professional
You are still a professional and you’re going to work even if you don’t have to go anywhere. So, treat it like any workday. Sure, there is no commute, we’ll award you a little extra time in bed but don’t abuse it, get up and set yourself a working schedule. Even allocate yourself a lunch break if you feel this would help you to start on task.
Look the part too. When you get up, shower and get dressed. No need for a full suit, you are at home after all. But put on clean clothes that would be acceptable on a video conference for example. Don’t fall into the trap of working in your dressing gown. This again has a mental as well as practical impact on your attitude towards work.
Technology
If you are going to work from home the chances are you’ll need to communicate with your peers via technology. Get yourself set up with a ZOOM account or another conference video service so it’s professional and reliable. Make sure your workspace is clear and there are no noise issues. In this day and age there is no excuse for poor camera and microphone set up either. These pieces of hardware are cheap as chips these days, invest in some!
