How to get your app featured on the App Store

Rebecca Appleton • 10 August 2018

If you have an iPhone (and you probably do), you’ll no doubt have browsed through Apple’s top picks on the App Store once or twice. Having taken up an app development business opportunity, you might even be wondering how to get your own designed app featured in one of the coveted spots. Getting your app featured on the App Store, takes a little luck and a lot of work but, it is possible to do.

Read on to learn how to get your latest app featured …

Make sure your description is optimised

Getting plenty of downloads logged makes the App Store more likely to sit up and take notice of your app. But to get on the App Store’s radar, you first need to get on user radars. The key to this is making sure that your app description is well optimised (and well written of course). Your app’s description should be informative and engaging so it captures the attention of the user searching the Store for their next download.

Include keywords to boost the discoverability of your app and include high quality screenshots to encourage downloads along with videos. IN short, do everything you can to show the reader how the app meets their needs, so they don’t depart your app page without making a download.

Make sure the app is well designed, error free and up to date

Again, these are standards of good app design but, you’ll need to double check that you can confidently tick off each of these requirements if you’re hoping to get featured. That means being consistent with bug testing, making sure the app is error free, is generally well-designed and easy to use and is up to date. Keeping the app up to date means acting quickly to deploy bug fixes and regularly releasing updated versions of the app.

Think about your icon

You want users to want to download your app. You also want your app to stand out and be eye-catching. That means that you should also put some thought into your app’s icon.

Build your app for the user

Creating an app so good it can’t be ignored comes down to one core consideration – your user. The App Store promoted apps are chosen by human reviewers rather than bots. Those humans will want to know that your app is the best of the bunch, gives users downloading the app exactly what they need and works well to boot.

Ask!

You can ask Apple to promote your app, using the dedicated form at developer.apple.com. This might seem like it’s a shot in the dark but once you are confident you have the best possible app you can build, what do you have to lose by bringing it to Apple’s attention?

Timing

Rumour has it that final decisions for the week’s promotions are made on a Thursday. So submit your app with careful thought to timing – a Tuesday for example rather than a Friday.
