Apple held its annual World Wide Developer conference this week and as usual, it was jam packed with new product announcements and company developments, including the closure of the iTunes store. One of the other takeaways to emerge from the WWDC was the unveiling of iOS 13 – Apple’s new operating system.
Apple’s Senior Vice President of Software Engineering Craig Federighi introduced the new iOS on stage and shared plenty of insight, sneak peeks and thinking behind the totally upgraded 13. Here’s a few of the core features that were revealed:
Better performance
Users can expect iOS 13 to usher in notable performance improvements. Chief among them, Federighi said that the system will be much faster, both from a day-to-day use perspective and for downloading things such as apps. The system will use a new packaging format for app downloads, making the file smaller and therefore quicker. Updates will also be smaller and quicker.
Data and privacy
Data and privacy are both front and centre in iOS 13. This overarching focus covers a number of different areas with the operating system and the user’s library of apps. A user choosing to share their location data with an app for example, can do so once – the app won’t automatically retain that permission and will prompt the user the next time that information is required.
Sign in with Apple, which works similarly to the Sign in with Google or Sign in with Facebook log in tools which many sites and apps use will add additional security. The use of Sign in with Apple will revoke the tracking that other third party sites currently have when a user opts to Sign in with Facebook or Google. Sign in with Apple uses face ID, so no additional data or personal information is required or passed on to third parties.
Spam calls from unknown contacts will now be redirected straight to voicemail too and the system will show users which apps are tracking them and close privacy concerns linked to Wi-Fi and Bluetooth scanning use.
App users will additionally be able to protect their email address by obtaining a unique Apple email address, forwarded to the user’s own account, should they not wish to give an app contact information.
Functional app changes
Lots of the standard apps will get an iOS 13 upgrade including messaging, emojis, Maps, Notes and Reminders. The camera app will get a portrait lighting feature and video editing will be integrated for the first time with filters and effects from the camera.
Voice search
Siri has been upgraded too with a new voice, app, automations, audio sharing and notification alerts.
