Guidelines for developing Progressive Web Apps

Eazi-Apps Support • 15 December 2017

The benefits of PWA are becoming more apparent to businesses, app developers and digital marketing agencies around the world but the truth is that the technology is still relatively new. Since Google first introduced the PWA concept in 2015, there has been a minimal amount of literature published that covers best practices and how to utilise PWA effectively. Many companies are still finding their feet with Progressive Web Apps so here are some things to consider before venturing into this growing sector.

Plan your approach

When a new trend comes along in the digital industry it is often the case that many developers or brands will jump straight on the bandwagon in order to ride the wave and reap any potential benefits. Quickly rushing to make a PWA simply to get it on the market could cause more problems down the line. Of course, you don’t want your company to get left behind and it can be like walking a tightrope, however, taking time to plan your approach and craft a professional, streamlined web app will help you navigate the uncertain waters of this new market.

Keep it simple

In the world of app design, sleek and simple always wins and the same can be said for PWA. After all, the aim of a Progressive Web App is to utilise the usability and simplicity of a native app in a quicker and more convenient environment. When designing your digital product, aim to approach it in the same way you would a native app. Unlike desktop sites, a mobile web app should have the fat trimmed and make it easy for the user to navigate and find essential information.

Know your strengths

Although it is important that you can effectively utilise the design aspects and interface usability of a native app, don’t neglect to promote the benefits of Progressive Web Apps. The hybrid apps are designed to utilise the best aspects of web browsing and in-app navigation so use that to your advantage. Promote the fact that PWA do not require any installation and that they can be shared easily through social media with just a link.

Focus on speed

The main benefit of us PWA is that they are a much quicker alternative than native apps. Accessing the web app is done simply through a link which means that the process of searching, downloading and installing that comes with native apps is completely cut out. It’s important to maintain this sense of speed throughout the process so as a business or developer, ensure that you create an interface and a design that is free from clutter, easy to navigate and quick.
