Every word in the English language can be defined but not many words are as subjective as the term “success”. Much like happiness, success means different things to different people. Using the Oxford Dictionary as a starting point, success is defined as, “the accomplishment of an aim or purpose”.
However, the level of success someone achieves is often very personal and correlated to their outlook on achieving their aims. For example, two individuals running their own businesses may have very different ideas of what success means to them. Person A may feel success is breaking even at the end of the year whereas person B may view success as turning over a significant profit. Both definitions are correct but subjective, as illustrated.
Furthermore, if we take two businesses we can see more differences and more subjectivity. For example, a charity such as ‘Oxfam’ will deem success as eradicating poverty and making a difference to the lives of under privileged people around the world. At the other end of the spectrum, we have large banking institutions such as ‘HSBC’ that deem success as having a strong balance sheet and return for investors in the form of dividends.
While we have identified that success is very subjective, how does one maximise the chance of success? There are many factors that play a part in determining success such as work ethic, psychological outlook, luck, type of product/services, training, to name just a few. However, one of the most important variables to success is mentoring and learning from someone that is achieving success.
Mentoring is defined as access to, “an experienced and trusted adviser”. Selecting the right type of mentor is crucial to getting the most out of any mentoring programme. For example, at Eazi-Apps each new partner is assigned their own 6 week Partner Mentoring Program after their initial 2 day training course to give the best possible chance of success.
Looking at the majority of successful people, organisations or teams and one constant becomes obvious – the role of the mentor or coach. The reason why a mentoring programs works so well is because the mentor can focus on areas that the individual needs to improve. For example, a professional tennis player such as Andy Murray has access to a coach/mentor who can look at the bigger picture and make refinements to perfect technique, mental approach and stamina resulting in success. Similarly in a business context, a mentor can make the difference in areas such as lead generation, selling techniques and closing deals, all of which can be the difference between success and failure for a business.
In our opinion, every individual or organisation can benefit from a mentor as it hugely increases the chance of success. By having access to someone who has the practical knowledge, expertise and experience in your line of work can help you eliminate mistakes in the short and long term. It also allows you to laser focus on areas that may be holding your business back from advancing further and achieving true success.
Another benefit of mentoring is the ability to have someone that you can brainstorm and bounce ideas with in a collaborative way. In most cases, talking and discussing new strategies or opportunities with someone that is not connected with the day to day running of your business can provide more clarity in making decisions.
Success means different things to different people and is a very subjective term. However, utilising the expert guidance and help of a mentor can profoundly increase the chance of achieving success. At Eazi-Apps, we are passionate about helping all our partners achieve a level of success that is unique to them by virtue of our 6 week mentoring programme and complete business in a box solution.
