Instagram rolls out in-app checkout

Instagram has made a major app update this week with the debut of Checkout. This is a new service which means that users can purchase products directly from their Instagram Feed and pay without having to leave the app. Users spotting a product they want to buy click on the brand’s shopping post and then tap the new ‘Checkout on Instagram’ button. The shopper will make their selections from options such as size and colour and then provide payment and shipping details before placing the order on Instagram.

The Checkout in-app purchase is being tested in beta with a select number of brands including Adidas, Burberry, H&M and Kylie Cosmetics.

Apple confirms TV streaming foray

In a star-studded launch, Apple has confirmed it will launch its own streaming service to rival Netflix. Called Apple TV+, the app launch was shepherded by Steven Spielberg – who it has been confirmed will direct new content for the app later this year. Also in attendance were Friends actress Jennifer Anniston, Aqua Man, Jason Momoa and Reese Witherspoon. In addition to being available on Apple TV, the Apple TV+ app will also be streamed on other devices including smart TVs by Sony, LG and Vizio, Amazon’s Firestick and Roku.

Apple also launches News+ platform

Apple also launched News+ which will be available on all Apple devices. The subscription app will make around 300 magazines available to users for $9.99 per month. User picks will not be tracked by either Apple or advertisers.

Nike integrates its app with the in-store experience

Nike is pushing the boundaries of what its app can do with its newest release – an in-store experience exclusive to Nike+ members opening the app in store. When shopping in any Nike store, Nike_+ members will be able to unlock a range of perks to enhance their retail experience. Features include the ability to request a fitting room directly from the app, request specific sizes from the app, skip the line and pay on the app in store rather than at a till.
