Internet of Things has generated a lot of buzz in the wake of the smart home technology boom. The acronym refers to devices with embedded technology that allows them to communicate through network services. The IoT industry is set to reach a value of $3.7 billion by 2020. While this offers a lot of potential for ambitious app developers, there are a few important issues to consider.
Security
Much like with most other technological developments of the last decade, security has been a subject of concern with IoT. The concept itself revolves around the opening up of an interconnected global network of devices that can be accessed remotely, which is why fears have arisen regarding security. As it stands, there is no standardised security protocol when it comes to IoT which has opened the door to hackers. When creating apps that work in conjunction with IoT devices, developers should strive to embed effective security protocols.
App communication
One of the common problems with IoT that developers and tech companies point out revolves around the communication between devices. The current communication process between IoT devices and mobile apps runs through a cloud-based service which is usually handled by the manufacturer of the device. Instead of peer to peer communication, the app and the product connect through the cloud, which means that app developers may face issues when creating communication protocols.
Device recognition and organisation
With billions of IoT devices around the world and a lack of a standardised naming system, it will become increasingly difficult for app developers to monitor them. Many professionals within the industry have suggested the use of DNS as a global standard to remove the need for new protocols or new names.
Brand exclusivity
There are common concerns amongst developers that the IoT industry will follow the same trends as the smartphone market and create a brand war scenario. As it stands, most vendors that produce IoT devices boast open-source standards. However, as the industry grows and manufacturers look to gain increased market shares, developers may find themselves forced to pick a side and focus their app on one specific brand or technology. This, in turn, will have ramifications within the market, leaving consumers and app users with less choice and restricted services.
