There are no two ways about it, if you’re going to be a successful business person or entrepreneur you need to be able to speak. Of course, we don’t mean simply speaking. We’d hope you’ve mastered the spoken word by now. But what we really mean is the ability to be heard. To engage an audience and really communicate your message. Some of the most intelligent and talented individuals in this world often miss out on really being noticed because they’re not always the best communicators.
So, the next time you need to pitch, present or simply convey your ideas, whether it’s to a room full of people or even just a one-on-one to a potential app development client, try our never fail tips for better public speaking:
Remember Nerves are very normal
Nerves before a big talk or presentation do not mean you as an individual cannot cope. It’s in fact very, very normal. Even some of the most notorious public speakers and business people feel the same adrenaline and pounding heart before going on stage or into the spotlight as you do. It’s how you interpret these feelings that will either help or hinder your performance.
Excitement and anxiousness feel very much the same. When you drill down to it, they are actually just a matter of perspective. How you then interpret and use this will define the outcome. Get excited; mentally train yourself to enjoy the adrenaline instead of seeing it as a negative and you’ll find you can actually turn what you thought was nerves, into energy.
2. Preparation is not necessarily rehearsing
While it’s a good idea to loosely rehearse your material, particularly for a presentation skill address, that isn’t the be all and end all of adequately preparing yourself. Over rehearsing can actually turn you a little robotic. It takes the flexibility and conversational tone away from your message delivery. One of the keys to any public speaking is the ability to engage your audience and in many cases, being able to respond and think on the spot.
In order to prepare for this, it’s less about rehearsing and more about really knowing every detail of your material, of your message, of your purpose. Make sure you know everything you need to know even if it’s not something you’re planning to say. Being entirely comfortable with the subject matter will give you a better sense of preparation than a thousand rehearsals and it will allow you to quickly, professionally and with prior consideration, answer your audience’s questions or react to the room as you communicate with them.
3. Personality and opinion are vital
Yes, the point of your address is likely not about you as an individual. But that doesn’t mean you can’t shine through when you’re delivering your message. You don’t have to dance on stage of course, but add some humour of your own, put a spin on things and tell a personal experience as a story to help convey your point. Allow the audience to get to know you and your feelings around the subject as well as the intended message itself. It makes you real, it makes you human and will in most cases make you more relatable.
Without really knowing it, you’ll also find this style of speaking and presenting less nerve racking and ultimately resulting in a more natural, comfortable delivery.
