As entrepreneurs and website owners, we all put a lot of time and effort into getting visitors to our website. But, what happens when they actually arrive? If your analytics data (or lack of conversions) is showing that your web traffic doesn’t linger long before exiting your domain, it could be time to implement a few strategic tactics to encourage them to stick around a bit longer and explore all that you have to offer.
1. Make your visuals impactful
Seeing an endless amount of text can be very off putting for some visitors, especially if they’ve arrived on your site from a mobile device. Making sure you use plenty of engaging, impactful visuals is an easy way to make your site visually more appealing and therefore more welcoming for your visitors. Choose imagery appropriate to your brand but make those visuals pop. This could mean adding multiple images or changing your image style to include sliders and image carousels.
2. Think about your formatting
Keeping your visitor on site is all about keeping them engaged so you want to ensure that you’re doing that throughout the page. There are lots of ways to do this and the good news is, they’re all easy. The secret? It all comes down to formatting. Every so often, you can use cross-headers to break up big chunks of text for example. This catches the eye and lets the reader know what’s coming up next. They can also scan the page to get a clear idea of the upcoming content. Headers are also good for SEO purposes so sticking to this best-practice tip can also help your rankings to improve.
Bullet point lists are another way to make your content engaging and easy to digest, as are numbered lists.
3. Add graphs and charts for facts and figures
If you have lots of facts and figures, tables which segment the numbers make the information easier to absorb. Graphs and charts are also eye-catching but, importantly they present what could be complex information in a more logical manner.
4. Optimise for mobile
One of the biggest ways of increasing time spent on page is to ensure that your site is primed to welcome visitors from mobile devices. With mobile search the primary source of traffic, having a site which is easy to navigate, source information and interact with from a mobile device means your visitors are less likely to get frustrated and more likely to stay on page. This includes considerations such as page load times and form design.
